more food. no one's surprised.

seems keeping up with this is harder than i thought it would be. so far i've only updated from school. i'm stealing internet at home, so i can only do write ups at my desk, and since my right shoulder is apparently allergic to sitting in a chair for more than 10 minutes, posting from home probably won't happen much. coffee shops, here i come. anyway, i tried three new restaurants this past weekend, which means i'm nearly done with #18. looks like i really should have upped the ten to twenty! anyway, this is where i went:

last friday, jj and i went to vivo's after going for a (very windy) walk on town lake. i must say, i wasn't very impressed. only redeeming quality was the fantastic margarita(s) i had. the food was mediocre; jj was trying to be nice by getting us queso even though he doesn't much care for it, and we would have been better off without it. it was so bland! i mean i know queso is just melted cheese, but even my velveeta + rotel mix is better than vivo's queso. my dinner was some special chicken chalupa thing that was topped with an unnecessary amount of iceberg lettuce. the generous slices of avocado were nice, though. people have talked about this place a lot, so i was excited upon going, but left disappointed. probably won't go back there, not even for a rose.

for dinner on saturday, after jj and i played a chilly game of volleyball with his astronomy friends, we went to longhorn po boy. jj had told me that it was the best burger in town, so naturally that's what he ordered, but i have a thing about ordering veggie burgers at all the burger joints i go to. i only order veggie burgers if i know the place makes the patties themselves; i don't want a place to serve me a gardenburger because i have those in my freezer. this veggie burger was definitely house made and it had a very distinct greek influence: the black bean patty was made with falafel, and it was fantastically seasoned. i got it with cheddar, lettuce, pickles, mustard and avocado - the perfect sandwich! the bun was also delish - made the burger that much better. i tried jj's burger and he was right, it was one of the best burgers i've ever had. next time i'll go red meat for sure. fries were also freshly fried and handcut, which i'm a fan of, AND they had maine root root beer (my favorite!). i'm glad jj lives close to this hole in the wall so i can have an excuse to stop in for seconds (and thirds and fourths...).

now, sunday morning: brunch at taverna for lauren and her bridesmaids. when she told me they had dollar mimosas during brunch, i figured i'd love it, even if the food sucked. when we arrived a little after eleven, there was a bit of a wait, but after about five minutes of waiting at the bar, the hostess said we were bumped up to first on the list since we were a complete party. the mimosas were cold and delicious, and i ordered a chorizo sausage and manchego cheese omelet: also delish. i can't make an omlete to save my life (jj can!), and although it was enough for me to have had leftovers, i big fat ate the whole thing. had to have something to absorb the multiple mimosas i downed! i could definitely see coming back here for brunch or dinner, even though it's in that yuppie second street district downtown. everything was reasonably priced and although the limited seating area might mean a wait, i'd be okay with that. just means more time for sipping dollar mimosas!

I love reading about food. I think food is one of Austin's most redeeming qualities. My friend Andy and I talked about Austin restaurants for two hours on the way to Dublin the other day! I dare you to find a better breakfast than Curra's chilaquiles. I DARE YOU!
